How do we define ourselves?

Is through what we do?

Who we love?

What we have experienced?

Through our education?

Through culture?

Through our pain?

Through our desires?

Through loss?

Do we define ourselves in different ways to suit the needs of different people?

Does our definition change depending on the circumstance or context?

Do we morph our self-concept out of necessity or survival?

Can a particular person or happening alter this notion?

When do we change our self-concept and why?

How does our notion of self influence others……and change their self-concept…

There are different definitions of self or self-concept:

Professional definitions of self

Personal definitions of self

A definition within a family

A definition within a marriage

A definition within a friendship or relationship

As our values grow and change how does this alter our self-concept?

Does our self-concept change through career and finance? Or is it still the same unaffected..self….

I think in your introspective analysis…we define ourselves through our experiances of life which mold who we are or want to be. As one becomes more fullfilled or succesfull in what ever it is that the person chases one reaches a pivitol point in life where everything changes but the core person. Those core values are inheriently picked up as we are growing up in our child hood from the factors or enviroments around us (IE Parents..friends)

As you grow those core values lend themselves to help form secondary traits in your personality. Those then themselves out to form other identities so to speak 🙂 Everything you have questioned is what forms who we are and how we identify ourselves..but it all comes down to our vore values. I must point out that you have very strong core values…”Honesty, Integrity, Compassion…” which make you who are you today. How you deal with each and every hoop thrown your way. Remember you are the only one who chooses to overcome obsticale you encounter and none but you can stop you. No need to change course, as you are on the correct heading to self enlightenment or is it actualization? Mmmmm….:)

I once heard something about the only way to grow is to look at yourself and question yourself?

So if it is true keep up the good work!

    Kindest Regards,

I miss you! I’ve been back in Victoria…. I am drentched in memories… I am going through all my old photos, poems, diaries… and I have also been thinking about how I’ve defined myself these last 20 years… through my relationships, my sport, my schooling, my looks (on a bad day), my strengths and my weaknesses.. even the places I have lived.

It is funny how you posted this just as I am thinking about the very same questions… i feel so connected to you sometimes it astounds me that we have not been friends forever! do you remember “Anne of Green Gables” and how she described her bossom buddy as being a kindred spirit. You are such a kindred spirit!
