Today our media class discussed the impact of Reality T.V. and news of a different sort of scripted television came to my attention: the TVBS mafia scandal. Last week TWBS a low brow Taiwanese cable news stations aired a video of a local gangster threatening in kill his rival. This news shocked and outraged many and set off a manhunt for the gangster. When the video was unearthed as fake and created by the head of the T.V. station, the TVBS general manager was forced to resign. To read more about it click here and here.
This “fake news” clearly impacts the Taiwanese viewing public who often have little trust of local journalists. In my media class students told me of a fake TVBS story involving bad duck meat which had disastrous effects on the local market. Once student in particular said that she wished Taiwan had a more reliable press as she did not trust any local media outlets at all. Hmmmm…….
In terms of our lecture on reality T.V. I realize that I need to think globally. What are the international trends? What programs are having a global impact on Asia, Europe, and North America. Hmmm……..
Displaying You Tube clips in class would also liven things up a bit so I am going to see if I can download anything decent this week…
