Sanjaya can’t sing but does it really matter? A post on questions for tomorrow’s media class.

Sanjaya is quickly becoming a media phenomenon who is loved and hated for what he brings to American Idol. Does it matter if he is charming, individualistic, and sings like a karaoke singer? Of course not. However, I do think that the controversy surrounding this 17 year old boy is worth noting. If Americans have a right to elect a bum president why not an off key American Idol? What I don’t like seeing is how so much of the media is personally attacking Sanjaya. He is after all just a confident and experimental 17 year old kid.

In tomorrow’s lecture I am also taking a look at Survivor and how the series thrives on the age old concept of voyeurism. People never get tired of looking through other people’s windows or dirty laundry. Moreover, many viewers feel that by observing how others react on the series they are learning a few lessons in human nature, albeit dubious ones at that. Big Brother UK is also mentioned and as a class we shall question whether reality shows are kind or cruel to their T.V. stars.
