Down Jacket Blues

Self-portrait taken while wearing my down jacket Taiwan’s High Speed Rail

For years, I would turn my nose up at down jackets, despite living through the hash Canadian Winter in Montreal.  My coat of choice was leather or sheepskin, a good and fashionable insulator to keep heat close to the body.  However, now that we are spending winter in Taiwan I am living in my NET down jacket as my refined wool and cashmere coat from Sogo is insufficient for the prevalent cold weather.

On the surface winters are not cold in Taiwan.  Today in HsinChu the weather is fluxuating between 5 and 17 degrees.  As a Canadian that is not cold.  Yet homes and workplaces are not heated in Taiwan so the uniform of choice becomes- yes you guessed it the down jacket.  Everyone is wearing one.  The school principal, the administrative assistance, the school nurse, teachers, and students.  I wear my down jacket, scarf, hat, and gloves INSIDE!  At home, in the office, while teaching, on the street, in job interviews.

Asymmetrical Love: Jennifer Lopez style

Here is a photo of JLo in a smashgazmic asymmetrical dress.  Needless to say she is looking fierce, although I do think the giant gold earrings are a bit too blingy for my taste.  Asymmetrical is my favorite cut and I am loving the long sleeves and white drapery.

Guilty Consumer Pleasure: Starbucks

The Starbucks at the HsinChu High Speed Rail Station

Yes it’s true.  I’ll admit it.  I love Starbucks in Taiwan.  In Canada I deeply resented the overpriced and overrated coffee superstars especially in comparison to cooler and more community oriented independent cafes.  However, here in Taiwan Starbucks is a guilty pleasure I look forward to.

Have you ever had one of their fresh juices in mango or blackberry?  Splendid!  What about that chicken panini?  A great healthy tasty lunch!  Moreover, Starbucks provides me with some Western comfort in a sometimes overwhelming foreign land.  The cafes are comfortable and oddly reassuring of any homesick blues.  They have the same feeling as in Canada and sometimes that can be just the ingredient you came for.

Photos from the HsinChu High Speed rail station series

These images were taken last Tuesday and are the first part of a series on the HsinChu HSR station.  Enjoy!

Racism on the set of Big Brother in Britain: How Jane Goody’s behaviour towards Shilpa Shetty exposes hidden prejudice in our society

Jade Goody

People are racist even if they don’t want to admit it.  Over the last week on Channel 4’s reality T.V. show Celebrity Big Brother contestant Jane Goody said several racist slurs towards fellow contestant Shilpa Shetty.

The result has impacted international relations between the two countries and shockingly exposed prejudice which exists in British society.   To me this happening which has engulfed the British and International press is a positive occurrence as it exposes racial bias which can often be overlooked or excused.    Continue reading ‘Racism on the set of Big Brother in Britain: How Jane Goody’s behaviour towards Shilpa Shetty exposes hidden prejudice in our society’

Not letting the negativity of others get me down with comparisons of color and black and white photography

The objective of this post is to address negativity and pettiness that is often prevalent in interpersonal relationships.  Basically I don’t let it get to me.  If a co-worker or acquaintance is petty or aggressive I ignore it and move on.
