Perez Hilton is busted or how the ‘Queen of All Media’ is being sued

Perezzers, Miz Tinsley Mortimer and Casey Spooner of Fishcerspooner.
Today I happened to read on http://www.fadedyouth.blogspot.com/ that one of my favorite web bloggers Perez Hilton was being sued for stealing paparazzi photos and putting them up on his sarcastic gossip blog www.perezhilton.com.

Perez Hilton, or (Mario Lavandeira his real name), insights mixed reactions from the media. Some love his tongue in cheek, blogging which can be rude, crude, cruel, completely real and complete lies. That being said, his comments on popular culture are a refreshing change from the traditional press and most of his views would never be reported in the mainstream media.

However, it appears Perez has been using the photographs on his site without proper authorization and is now being sued by several different photo agencies, including X17 online for over $17.5 million. I don’t know how to feel about this. Part of me understands that he has no right to rip of the paparazzi. But another part of me feels sad for Perez. He is after all, an underdog. Any comments?

Definitely worth following, as 1000s of other gossip blogs are doing the very same things.

I enjoy Perez’s site. I hope everything is settled peacefully and that he doesn’t stop blogging. I love how he rips celebs apart.

It’s inevitable, and the sooner we get some case law behind us, the sooner we’ll all know what we can and can’t do online. All precedent tells me the copyright holders (the photographers in this case) will prevail. Small fry that I am, I’ve always been extraordinarily careful about nicking pictures, on account of I am a coward.

Which is good on the one hand, as you say. If you’re someone who does images for a living, you don’t like to see them stolen. But I wonder about the true legal standing of things like those news photos that appear and are instantly multiplied on millions of blogs (Brittany Spears’ dealie, anyone?)

If it turns out you can do what you like as long as you’re a little guy and nobody notices, that’s a pretty poor thing to work with.

That said, I doubt Hilton has $17 million, so they’re just piling on. Past a certain point, it’s like suing someone for a jillionty-willion dollars and fifty cents.

    S. Weasel I totally hear you on the need for copyright definition on the web. It seems that as long as you are not profiting from using images its o.k.

I am glad he has finally been busted. He has been stealing photos from real photographers and making lots of money from it. He also is (or was) extremely cocky about it and would not stop stealing after being asked to stop. I hope they bury him.

Here is some good reading from a photographer that he has stolen from countless times.

there is several blogs on him on Chris Weeks site. Check into it.

Ok, I take back my previous comment after reading the blog Terry Zumalt posted. I still get a kick out of reading Perez’s blog, but he does need to pay for what he has done.
