Photos of Quinn Gormely or How a Change of Environment Impacts Creativity

Quinn Gormely these photos are for you.  They were taken more than three years ago and I’m sorry that I did not really get around to looking at them until yesterday.  You are an amazing fun, witty, fabulous, generous and caring person.  Looking forward to seeing you soon; either in the U.K., B.C., or Taipei.

My former life in Montreal was busy and even though I wanted to work on my photography, I somehow never could.  I was always distracted.  Distracted with work.  Distracted with finishing my M.A..  Distracted with the condo.  Distracted with things that really were not that important but that I somehow felt compelled to do. Now that I’m in Taiwan my creativity is surging and in many ways I’ve never felt better.  This week in a letter to Sarah A. I wrote the following line: “When you travel you usually think about what you will discover on the exterior but the interior journey is really what the experience is all about.”

This brings up an interesting question: to what extent is creativity impacted by environment and daily life?  It would be an interesting study to consider the work of different working artists and analyze what environmental factors limited or encouraged their creativity.  Hmmmm.    On a personal level I know that leaving Montreal was the right thing to do because I was completely out of touch with my creativity.  It was a terrible bleak time.  That does not mean that I was not successful in other areas or that I did not develop my photography.  My technical skill increased but my ability to take an image that I saw as raw art failed.   The lesson in all of this is that you should just stop what you are doing and do what makes you happy.  Have fun, be fulfilled.  Enjoy life.  Smile.  Waste time.  Life is too short for anything else.

Oh, and I have discovered some more dashing photos of Quinn from 1999 that will be posted soon….  There are also a few images from this session that did not load.  So please check back tomorrow to see more photos of Quinn.
