Letter to a friend

First of all I would just like to say that you are one of my best friends and are loved by many. Please don’t drown. So many people love you! For who you are baby! And the fact that you are fun, cool, hip, charismatic, and good-looking while the rest of the world is about as interesting as Stephen Harper ‘s haircut.

When it comes to adventures in life I have an expression “are the circumstances right” meaning do I have enough time, cash, or stress to be able to do something. If the answer is negative to two of these three elements I don’t do it. That can be for something as inconsequential as meeting with acquaintances during my free time, to going on a wild and crazy adventure over the long weekend. If it is not worth the stress, don’t to it. But I know what it is like to dream of or to want more freedom. Life is a compromise and sometimes you just have to do the right thing.

Don’t worry about money. Many are struggling so don’t place too much importance on it. It does not matter. You are working towards improving your situation and career and that is the most important thing. So many do not have the guts to do what you are doing and are trapped. Besides many would be happy to be in your position so enjoy it and be thankful for what you have.

Don’t compare yourself to others or be intimidated by their accomplishments or status trappings. Be confident of who you are, the road you have traveled, and proud in your beliefs.

People hate or pick on each other for a variety of reasons but usually it is because they resent confidence, success, or individuality and are insecure about their position in life. Keep your head down, stay cool, and count the days until moving on to a better situation. There will still be some good days so don’t let the bastards get you down.

Continue to dream and chase your desires in life.  Love,

Jo

  • Writing With Video Reflection March 31, 2012
Over the past several days I have been reflecting on my progress in Joseph Squier’s Writing with Video course. The class is one of my favorites at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign as it promotes daily engagement with creativity alongside the video-making research process. This semester re-engaging with photography and art/video-making has been […]

  • Musings on the conception of home March 28, 2012
The notion of home is very important to me. For the past year and a half my life has been in transition between the move to Illinois, start of my Phd, subsequent divorce, and home renovations. More than anything else I want a home to share and call my own. The house is slowly getting [...]

  • Film for Module 3- Writing with Video March 28, 2012
For our Writing with Video module 3 I would like to do an extension of my first film and question the relationship between art-making and art education. Within the field practitioners are often encouraged to promote art educational research over art-making practice. This dichotomy is unfortunately aligned with the expression “those that can’t do teach”. [... […]
